Blankie (2024)

Blankie (2024) is a soft sculpture and photographed happening focused on processes and actions around comfort; specifically comforts of my own childhood. I slept with my blankie for a long time. I would play with its soft edges as it soothed me to sleep. I recreated a blankie with my own hands, recalling its physical memory. I intended the process of hand sewing, comfort “crafts” that reminded me of my grandmother, smearing, coloring, staining, ripping, and sticking to replicate actions from my childhood. I ensured each 9 patches a different texture to activate a different sensational effect. This piece is a nostalgic ode to the relationship I had with my "blankie," an inanimate object that fostered touch, comfort, warmth, and play that I still hold dear as an adult.
